Lets chat equipment. One of the most common pieces of Pilates equipment is the Reformer. Originally developed by Joseph Pilates to help World War I bedridden soldiers get movement in without getting out of bed. Over the years the design has been refined to its current incarnation to help progressively strengthen, facilitate mobility, improve balance, prevent injury and generally feel awesome! How does the reformer work?
The Reformer uses different levels of spring based resistance that creates tension on a gliding platform to either assist or challenge movement. There are many ways to move on the Reformer: laying down, quadruped, kneeling, standing, sitting, planking, the options are endless. A pulley system attached to the top also adds to the many movement options, which combined with the spring tension creates an environment to challenge the whole body both concentrically and eccentrically in many planes of movement. How am I using the Reformer to help my Pilates peeps?
🪶 Improve foot mobility after breaking a foot bone.
❄️ Build foundational strength to get ready for ski mountaineering season.
🦩 Challenge hip stability and mobility to help with back pain
👠 Strengthen glutes and hips to lessen tight hamstrings.
